Join the Portsmouth Master Gardener Volunteer Program!
Do you love gardening and want to make a difference in your community? The Portsmouth Master Gardener Volunteer Program offers an opportunity to gain expert knowledge, connect with fellow gardeners, and contribute to meaningful environmental initiatives.
✔ Comprehensive Training – Learn about soil health, plant care, pest management, and more.
✔ Hands-On Experience – Volunteer at plant clinics, community gardens, and educational programs.
✔ Community Impact – Help residents adopt sustainable gardening and landscaping practices.
How to Apply
📝 Step 1: Submit an Application
Applications will be accepted Fall 2026 for the 2027 class.
📢 Step 2: Attend an Interview & Orientation
Qualified applicants will be invited to a session where they can learn more and ask questions.
🔍 Step 3: Background Check & Training Fee
Upon acceptance, a background check will be run. Once cleared, the $175 training fee covers reference materials and 60 hours of training. (Scholarships are available.)
📅 Step 4: Training Begins
🗓 February - April
📍 Location: Portsmouth VCE Office, 105 Utah Street, Portsmouth, VA
⏰ Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
(Subject to change, Some classes will be held at other locations, Some Saturdays required)
🎓 Step 5: Volunteer & Make an Impact!
After training, interns volunteer 50 hours through community events, gardening projects, and educational programs. Ongoing volunteers dedicate 20 hours to volunteering and 8 hours to continuing education annually.
